Place: Memphis, Tennessee & Chicago, Illinois
Time: 1862 -1931 A.D.
Mrs. Ida B. Wells-Barnett became the protesting voice for the thousands of American citizens who were lynched. As part owner of the Memphis Free Speech newspaper, Mrs. Wells-Barnett had direct access to an advertising vehicle to constantly lobby the government to put an end to mob lynchng and discrimination. For her efforts, a cowardly white mob destroyed her Memphis newspaper office and threatened to kill her if she did not drop her anti-lynching position and leave town. With a bounty over her head, she did leave Memphis, but vehemently refused to drop her anti-lynching crusade. She continued to expose lynching as a simple terrorist tactic and identified the hypocrisy of the government for allowing lynching to continue in public speeches and published articles for years on in.
